Prayers of the People

20 April 2008

Deacon:      Let us make our prayer for the Church and the world.

The leader stands in place and bids the prayers.

Leader:       For the Church, and especially for those grafted into the Body of Christ on the feast of the Lord’s dying and rising, let us pray to the Lord.

For those set apart to minister to God’s people:  and especially in our own family within the family of God, for Rowan, and Katherine, and Paul, and Patrick, and Rodney, let us pray to the Lord.

For Benedict, the Bishop of Rome and the Patriarch of the West; for his safety; for an end to the sad divisions in the Body of Christ, let us pray to the Lord.

For the Church of Ireland, remembered prayerfully this day in all the congregations of the Anglican Communion, let us pray to the Lord.

For St. Mark’s and St. John’s churches in Jim Thorpe, held in prayer this day in every parish of the Diocese, and for Fr. Joseph D’Acetis, let us pray to the Lord.

For the nations of the world where strife and war tower over concord and peace:  for Iraq and Afghanistan; for China and Tibet; for Darfur and Pakistan, for Zimbabwe, let us pray to the Lord.

For a spirit of wisdom to guide us as we choose candidates for the presidency, and for those who seek the nominations, let us pray to the Lord.

And especially this week for the people of our own state as we cast our votes, let us pray to the Lord

For those who have been recommended to our prayers, suffering in body or mind or soul:

for Jackson Knudson, and for his parents, let us pray to the Lord.

For David Evans and Malcolm MacMillan, for Rafe Huffstutler, let us pray to the Lord.

For Al Lane and Edna McGinnis Bell and for Betty Carson; let us pray to the Lord.

For Betty Lysak and Connie Kistler, let us pray to the Lord.

For Gary Adams, and Gene Fiedler, and Elizabeth Fanning, let us pray to the Lord.

For Kenneth Stevenson; for Ryan Armstrong; for Margaret Huffstutler, let us pray to the Lord.

For our soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan this week, and for their families and friends:

Jeffery Hartley, 25;  (pause after each name and age)

Jeremiah Hughes, 26;

Anthony Capra, 31;

Shaun Tousha, 30;

Jesse Ault, 28;

Jacob Fairbanks, 22;

William Allmon, 25;

Richard Nelson, 23;

Dean Opicka, 29;

Arturo Huerta-Cruz, 23;

Joseph Richard III, 27;

and for the citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan who died this week, unknown to us and unnamed, and for those who mourn, and for an end to this endless war, let us pray to the Lord.

And for the resurrection of Joseph Villano, and for the peace and comfort of his family, let us pray to the Lord.

And for the resurrection of all the others who have died, especially those in whose memory this room is adorned for the feast, and for Ronald Haines, former Bishop of Washington, and for the dying, and for those who mourn, let us pray to the Lord.

For what else should we pray this day?

The leader leaves a significant period for free biddings.  When there seem to be no more, the leader says:

 For all the needs of the Church and the world, let us pray to the Lord.

The presider concludes the litany with a collect, and then bids the peace.
